Endodontics is a field of dentistry where infections that occur at the centre of the teeth are treated. Root canal treatment is the most common procedure that is performed by an endodontist.

The root canal treatment is often referred to by the same name as the field of dentistry, although endodontists refer to it as a root canal procedure, therapy or surgery.

Teeth are made up of three layers – the enamel, the dentine and the pulp. If the pulp becomes infected, the infection can spread through the root canal system of the tooth and can be very painful. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the infection will spread and can result in the tooth needing to be extracted.

What are the symptoms of root canal problems?

• Experiencing severe pain when you chew or apply pressure
• Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
• Discolouration or darkening of the tooth
• Swelling and tenderness in the gum near the tooth
• A persistent or recurring pimple of the gums

It is very important to visit a dentist or an endodontist when you first start to experience any of the above symptoms. An x-ray is often needed when root canal problems are suspected. This is to detect how close the damage is to the nerve inside the pulp chamber of the tooth.

If a cavity is found to be near the pulp, it is likely that the pulp will have already become infected. A root canal procedure will eliminate any pain and remove any infected tissue. If the infection is left untreated, you can lose the tooth completely which would lead to you needing a dental implant or bridge.

What happens during a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment starts by cleaning the infected pulp by removing any abscesses, allowing the infection to be drained. Tissue from the pulp chamber will be removed and any remaining nerve tissue will be cleared. Medication is left in the tooth before proceeding to the next stage.

The second stage of root canal treatment is where the canals are cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling will be applied and the tooth will be left to settle down before the permanent filling is put in.
