Researchers in Germany may have devised a revolutionary sweet that reduces the amount of cavity causing bacteria on our teeth. If successful, this could help in the fight against tooth decay, enamel damage, gum disease and the maintenance of good dental hygiene during the dental implant aftercare process.
The inside of the mouth is a balance of good and bad bacteria and we clean our teeth to remove as much of the cavity causing bad bacteria as we can, leaving a healthy environment for good bacteria to develop, thrive and protect our teeth and gums.
When we eat, the food is broken down by our teeth and some of this is left on our teeth, this is often referred to as plaque. This plaque contains different strains of bacteria and can stay on our teeth for a long period of time, eventually releasing acids that break down the enamel of our teeth and wear away our gums.
This is why it’s important to remove this bad bacteria by using fluoride rich toothpaste twice a day, along with flossing and chewing sugar-free gum after meals.
Further to this established routine, researchers from the Berlin based company Organoblance GmbH in Germany have now devised a sugar-free sweet that contains dead bacteria that clings to bad bacteria, reducing it’s impact. This helps in the fight of reducing cavities by maximising the good bacteria and minimising the bad.
In their research, published in Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins, they claim that when this sweet was used by subjects in their trial, bad bacteria was reduced, reducing the risk of the release of acids that cause the aforementioned damage.
We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on this as it develops and it may well turn out to be an addition to a future characterised by developments in medical science. But for now, it’s important to maintain a good dental routine centred around brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least 3 times a week throughout your lifetime.

Dental treatments aren’t your typical topic of conversation. It’s not very common to rank them by glamour or popularity and it’s quite rare to find a group of friends discussing which dental treatment gets the most media coverage – but if you had to pick the least glamorous of all of the dental treatments, then you could argue a good case for crowns, veneers and bridges. Crowns
Put very simply, crowns (or caps) are a very successful way of restoring heavily damaged or broken teeth by placing a tooth coloured cap over the existing tooth – for teeth that are badly damaged, dental crowns can be a highly practical and cosmetically-friendly treatment option.
Over just a few appointments with your dentist, impressions of the affected teeth are taken and crowns are created with the goal of reaching the perfect fit and look.
They are also a very durable treatment, with an expected life of 10-15 years, depending on how well you look after them, of course.
Veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is individually made to fit over the front of a tooth. These can be used to easily change the shape and colour of a tooth and can also be used to disguise unwanted gaps between teeth.
Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten several front teeth.
In many cases, by covering the whole of the front of a chipped tooth with a section of porcelain to conceal the broken part, a chipped tooth can look intact again. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable. (BDHF, 2013).
Bridges
A bridge is fitted where a tooth is missing. The teeth either side of the space are crowned to support a false tooth that’s fitted in the space between.
Teeth only remain where they are in your mouth because they all support each other, if one is lost, then commonly the teeth each side of the space start to move into the space and tilt. This can lead to food getting trapped between your teeth and gum disease around the tilted teeth. The way your teeth “bite” may also change. A well-designed bridge will last many years and is a very good method of replacing one or two teeth. They can be made to replace more teeth than this if there are enough teeth in your mouth to attach them to.

- Perfect Pearls – Root Canal Treatment
The root canal system contains the dental pulp, a soft tissue at the centre of the tooth consisting of nerves and blood vessels that extends from the exterior crown of the tooth to the end of the root deep within the gum, in what’s known as a pulp chamber.
Infection of the root canal can occur if bacteria works it’s way into this soft tissue before proceeding to attack and kill the cells within. With no barrier to stop more bacteria passing through the root canal, this process can continue until the infectious bacteria passes out of the canal and into the gum, causing further infection of the surrounding gum tissue. This can cause pain and inflammation of the gums and in worst case scenarios, dental abscesses.
We have highly trained dentists at both of our practices who are specialists in working with root canal complaints. It’s important to visit them in the early stages of pain and infection to ensure the best treatment results.
Here at Perfect Pearls, an x-ray is usually recommended to those experiencing tooth pain in order to find out how close any damage is to the nerve inside the pulp chamber. If the damage is found within the dental pulp, the dentist will remove the tissue within the pulp chamber and clear any remaining nerve tissue from the root canals. Once the dental pulp tissue has been cleared, the dentist widens the root canal slightly and straightens the pulp chamber to prepare it for filling. The inside of the tooth is then disinfected. All of this is performed under a local anaesthetic, meaning its generally no more uncomfortable than receiving a filling.
